Packed stadium as Velasco makes debut with Argentina’s men’s team

There was much excitement and emotion as Argentina’s men’s team took to the courts for their friendly match against Tunisia, led for the first time led by coach Julio Velasco.

It was the first time in over 30 years that Velasco has sat on the Argentine side to hear his national anthem. Velasco stepped down as coach of the Iran national volleyball team earlier this year to lead the men’s team in his home country, Argentina. Appointed head coach of the Iran men’s national team in 2011, Velasco took up the top job in Argentina following a request from the country’s President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.

Monday’s friendly match saw Argentina achieve a straight set victory over Tunisia 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-14) at the UTC Stadium in Pacheco (Tigre) – a good start for the team just four days prior to the commencement of the FIVB Volleyball World League.

While Argentina’s players did display some nervousness initially, they were able to find their focus and play their best to win the match against the African champions, with Federico Pereyra and Facundo Conte topping the scoreboard. Velasco put to the test his new starting line-up in the third set of the match.

Another match is slated for Tuesday in Almirante Brown at 22:00 local time.

The Argentina men’s national team are playing friendly matches against Tunisia as part of their preparations for the FIVB Volleyball World League, where they will play hosts to France on May 24 and 25 in the city of Mendoza.

Argentina will be hosting a total of three weekends of the FIVB World League Intercontinental Round, including the matches against France in Mendoza on the first week. In the second weekend, Argentina will host Germany in Salta on May 31 and June 1, and Japan in Buenos Aires on June 6 and 8 at the state-of the art gymnasium, Lomas de Zamora.
Argentina will then travel to Komaki in Japan, Berlin in Germany, Mouilleron le Captif and Paris in France, to complete the seven-week-long Intercontinental Round of Pool B.
