Cuban Star Players Might Return

This rumor better be TRUE!

There’s a rumor circulating around that former star players of the Cuban women’s team are planning on returning and will represent their country starting next year. The following athletes are: 2004 bronze medalists Nancy Carrillo (MB), Daimi Ramirez (S/OPP) and Rosir Calderon (OH/OPP). Outside hitters Yusleidis Herrera, who has been playing in the Brazilian League, might also return with Kenia Carcases.

A source familiar to the news tells Volleywood…

“Cuban volley officials are aware with the current status of the volleyball program. The men’s and women’s programs are in a very sad state and the poor results (including missing the 2012 Olympics) have helped them realize that it’s about time to make some changes. One of the proposals is to invite former players to rejoin the team. The 5 female players are still playing in competitive volleyball leagues overseas and still have what it takes to rebuild the program in time for the 2016 Olympics.”

The source also adds that ONLY players who did not defect from Cuba will be invited.

We really hope this news is true and Cuba will bring back its glorious days in women’s volleyball.

In case you didn’t know, Carrillo and Calderon playing in Russia, Carcases in Switzerland, Ramirez in China, Herrera in Brazil.

We’d also like to add that Yumilka Ruiz is still active and plays in the Russian League as well. They might want to invite her as well and lead the team!

Thoughts?
