Chatting With Coach Hugh

We’re very, very, very, very, very fortunate to be given the time to have a short tête à tête with the one and only – Coach Hugh McCutcheon! There’s no doubt that he is one of the best coaches our generation has ever seen. Coach Hugh led the USA Men’s Team to an Olympic Gold in 2008. Since taking over the women’s team in 2009, he has guided them to win the 2010 World Grand Prix Crown.

Earlier this year, Coach Hugh announced that he has taken the coaching position at University of Minnesota. He’ll take over the women’s program after the 2012 Olympics.

He is legendary. He is great. He is an Olympic Gold medalist.

Here you go…

For players who plan on playing professionally, what are the things they should consider and what is your advice?

Assuming I was talking to US collegiate athletes I’d tell them that being a professional volleyball athlete is different from the traditional American perception of what it is to “go pro”. Talk to someone who’s played volleyball professionally so you can manage your expectations and learn more about what will be expected from you.

Volleyball is: A Great Sport.

If you’re given the chance to coach another team for only one day, which team would it be and why? (men or women)

1984 USA Men. I’d like to work with those athletes and experience the way they competed.

What are the main qualities to make a great coach?

Knowledge of the game, consistency, and the ability to build relationships of trust.

If volleyball never existed: I’d be a doctor or a teacher.

Message to the fans…

Thank you for your support. It’s a shame we don’t get to play more matches here in the US, but please know how grateful we are to have you cheering for us from afar.
