Remember Evgenia Artamonova?

Of course!

She was one of the world’s best players in the late 90s and until 2002 (?) then she got injured, then made it to the 2004 Olympics but was a bench player and then made her final Olympic appearance in Beijing in her worst physical condition. (Well Russia finished 5th and all the players seemed unprepared to play in Beijing. Things just didn’t work out for them.)

Evegnia Artamonova-Estes is one of the only 2 players in the world who has played in 5 Olympics! (Brazil’s Fofao is the other one!). Cuba’s Anna Valle Fernandez is the ONLY volleyball player who has won 4 Olympic medals (3 Golds and 1 Bronze).

Anyways, it’s GREAT to know Zhenya still plays professional volleyball in Russia for Uralochka and we found some pics of her. She still looks pretty!

Side Dish: Call us silly but we still want to see Zhenya in the 2012 Olympics (her 6th Olympic appearance). Zhenya is definitely one of the players who deserves an Olympic Gold. She has 3 Olympic Silvers already and we want her to retire with an Olympic Gold. This wish also applies to Sokolova. An Olympic Gold is the best way to seal your career just like what Fofao did. She waited for 16 yrs to finally get one and then retired.

WATCH: Zhenya’s last World Champ appearance was in 2002.

Russia won the BRONZE.
