Erika Coimbra On Prestiz

Erika goes to WERQ!

The 32 year old and 2 time Olympian Erika Coimbra, who currently plays for Atom Sopot in the Polish League, graces the cover of Poland’s Prestiz Magazyn.

In the February issue, the 2000 Olympic bronze medalist candidly talks about a LOTTTTTT of things like passion for shoppin (she has more than 200 pairs!), her career and many more.

Erika says:

“The photographer and staff who were doing my pictures did not understand what i was talking, neither i understood them (laughs). In 2004 I received an invitation to pose nude, but at that time i was very young. Today volleyball is more visible and salaries are better. In fact it’s not my dream to go out naked, but if I receive a proposal that would provide a great material value i will think about it.”

On playing abroad:

“I love to travel, to my great hobby, and low temperatures are not scary to me. Volleyball allows me to travel the world and live in different countries. I left Brazil when I was 29 to play overseas. I realized that when I’m 36-37 years I’ll be retiring so I wanted to try it. In 2010, I went to Istanbul then Azerbaijan the following year and finally in Poland starting last year.”

On her injury while in Azerbaijan:

“While in Azerbaijan, I experienced a very serious right leg injury. I went to the local doctor for advice but he told me that it was nothing serious and the pain will go away after 2 days. The next day along with the team, I went to Italy for a tournament. From Baku to Milan we flew for five hours. When we arrived, my leg was so swollen and it really scared me. I felt that I was in it all all alone, in addition to a foreign country. Then I called a friend from Brazil who played for Inter Milan. He came after me and took me to his medical team. When he saw my leg, he immediately said that I need to have surgery immediately.

It could have ended tragically. The next day I had the surgery because there was a risk of congestion and even amputation. My club was nervous and insisted so I returned to Baku and was treated there. Then I said clearly that I have to stay here in Milan, because I could lose my leg. Then Inter Milan helped me. They paid for everything and I lived in a 5 star hotel. I felt like a princess. My club did not care at all.

When everything wass back to normal, I made the decision that I go back to Brazil. Two weeks after surgery, I started training. The doctor told me that it is even recommended for proper rehabilitation. Over the next few months I was under constant medical care. And after 4 months, I went to Poland. Sometimes I still feel pain in the leg, especially when someone suddenly hits me but I stay calm because I know that nothing bad is happening.”

Her beauty secrets:

“I do not have too many cosmetics. I use sunscreen, I’m 32 years old so I take care of my skin and protect it against harmful agents. I use eye cream with vitamin C. I love make up! It’s very interesting because a lot of female players in Poland wear make up which is quite different in Brazil. I think it’s great though! I enjoy a good primer and opt for more natural colors, beige, browns. I really like the color pink…”

On her future:

“First of all I want to win (laughs). I am happy that I can pursue my passions. I love the adrenaline rush you feel when you play. I no longer have too much time from my career, so I have to enjoy it every day. In May, I go back to Brazil, see my family, my dogs and my horse. Then I’ll go to Las Vegas. After last season I went there too and I have many friends in Vegas. I love that place!

I also have more long-term plans like in 3 years I would like to see in the role of mother.”
