Stanford’s Carly Wopat Misses Sister Sam

Imua maluhia koa…

She lost her twin sister over a year ago but Carly dedicates her final year with Stanford to Sam. In an article released by ESPN, the middle blocker shared her personal thoughts about the upcoming season.

On her favorite phrase “Imua maluhia koa”:

“It means ‘Move forward, peaceful warrior. I like that, because that’s how I like to think of myself. I’m a very competitive person. My whole team, we are warriors out there, but there’s a calmness you should have. And every time we stepped out on the court, we were moving forward.”

On her sister’s death:

“It’s very complex. There are a lot of things going on in my mind. It’s kind of too difficult to describe. Through the whole thing, my one steady thing was volleyball. I knew I had to keep playing for myself and for Sam. It makes me happy. If I wasn’t playing, I don’t know what I’d be doing.”

On remembering her sister:

“I was happy and sad at the same time sometimes — bittersweet is a good way to describe it. My teammates supported me even when they couldn’t understand the things I was feeling. I tried to explain it to them the best I could because I wanted to keep things open.”

On the new season (which kicks off today):

“This is a different season. It’s a new season, and you can start clean and make whatever you want of it.”

The word “mana”:

“It means ‘spirit’. Throughout the season, I would say the word to myself when I was out on the court. It’s just to check in, I guess. I feel like whenever I walk out on the court, Sam is there with me in spirit and that makes me better.”

Last June 2012, Carly did this…

“On June 9th 2012, I took part in the Out of the Darkness Overnight Walk in San Francisco with Karissa Cook, Suzy Cook, and my mom. We walked 18 miles through the city to provide hope for those who suffer with mental illness, addiction, or depression. We endured the night to help strengthen those who see no way out and want to put a period at a place where God puts a comma. Here is the video of my journey.”
