Volleyball Serve Receive

Serve Receive By Touzinsky’s Elite Volleyball Camps:

I’m a big believer that ball control, passing the ball consistently to the target, and defense wins matches.

If you can receive the ball, 3 feet off the net and in the middle of the court, your setter will be able to run a fast and unpredictable offense.

Easier said than done right, of course. It’s very important that when your lining up to receive serve that the position 5 and 1 passers, left and right, are a couple feet in front of the middle back passer and a good 3-5 feet off the line. Couple reasons for that:

1)when moving into the seams that the passers won’t hit into each other or be thrown off allowing the outside passer to go in front and the middle back passer to go behind.

2)not many serves are hit directly on the line so we want to cover the seams and make moves back to the line if they do serve it there.

3)the wing passers have the short balls and the middle back passer has the deep balls. This is for float serves and jump serves since we have three passers and a lot of court to cover. In our last match I got into a little trouble when I was passing in middle back and I was actually a step in front of our wing passer which was throwing us off a little.

I watched it on the video and we have made the adjustment that I need to start 3 feet deeper, while small it has made a huge difference in our reception.

Any easy short serves should be taken by our middle blockers hands not their platform and tough jump serves should be passed high, aiming for the 10 foot line. Tough serves don’t need to be passed perfect, they need to be controlled in the middle of the court to get a good set and hit out of them.

Finally, a perfect pass is not directly on the net because it’s a tough ball for our setters to set. Your aim should be 3 feet off the net because if you push it a little too far then it’s tight and not an overpass. Last but not least, communication is king in passing. We need three calls after the serve:

1) Short or deep

2) Mine or yours

3) In or out.

See it, communicate it and pass it to the target to win matches!!!
