Holland’s Manon Flier Quits Beach Volleyball

In less than a year and only after 9 tournaments with partner Marleen van Iersel, former star player of the Dutch team Manon Flier has quit beach volleyball. The announcement was made a few days ago.

According to this article by volleybalkrant.nl, the decision is due to a back injury, constant traveling and the time spent being away from her family.

“The choice to stop playing beach volleyball has been a very difficult one. I enjoyed the beach volleyball sport and I think there was progress. I stop due to multiple factors. I have often had a back injury this season which also resulted in other physical complaints. In addition, it has been difficult to combine family life with the many trips as a beach volleyball player. By combining these factors, I decided to to stop.”

Manon’s last major tournament was at the World Champs in Vienna over a week ago. She and Marleen finished 17th. There’s no word yet if Manon will resume her professional indoor career.

Marleen, who will become a parent this year, is now looking for a new partner.

We wish them both the best as they start a new chapter.
