Italy coach Massimo Barbolini: “I think for us to get fifth was not so easy. I’m proud of my team because they played these two matches as if they were playing for first, so I’m happy. A great team is one that can always play as if they are playing for first place.

(On the London Olympics) “In Italy we’ve been talking about London for two years already. Now is the time to talk about London. When we return to Italy, we need to start preparing. The problem is to qualify, and in Europe it’s difficult to get to the Olympics. There are only three or four spots for European teams and there are, out of the top ten in world, about six teams from Europe. We have to start to think about Olympic qualification, and when we get to Italy we’ll do that.”

Italy captain Eleonora Lo Bianco: “I think this was very difficult, like yesterday (against Serbia). I say it’s difficult to play for fifth, because our dream was different. But I’m happy we finished with this result, with this victory against Turkey. So I’m satisfied with fifth place – not with the whole tournament, but with fifth place.”

Turkey coach Mehmet Bedestenlioglu: “Congratulations to the Italian team for their performance. We made many mistakes attacking today. Once we made mistakes, our performance went down. I am, of course, sad with the result of this match, but generally I am happy with our performance during the championship as a team. And I am happy about being sixth.”

Turkey captain Esra Gumus: “First it was a good game for Italy, and today our energy levels were down. Maybe we could have had a chance if we’d played more aggressively. They are a good team, maybe they were the favourites, because yesterday we gave all our energy.”
