Murilo on GQ

We must admit that since we don’t get to watch a lot of Superliga matches online, we really miss Murilo.

Note: This is not the actual GQ cover. We just created it for fun.

Anyways, the Best Player of 2010 is featured in Brazil’s GQ and BB shares quite a few things about his life, volleyball life to be exact. We were hoping to read something about his personal life, ie his marriage with the gorgeous Jaqueline. It would’ve been more interesting to know another side of Murilo. Right?

Some of our favorites…

His older brother, Gustavo,  motivated Murilo to play volleyball.

‘We did lots of sports as a kid. We lived in a house and had a land-side. My father played ball (a form of bowling of German origin, widely practiced in southern Brazil) and always encouraged us to do physical activity. But who pulled us to the same side of the volleyball were our uncles, who were passionate about the sport and play today. Over the weekend, one of them rode the network on the ground and we would play.”

“Gustavo has opened many doors for me, no doubt. He arrived in Sao Paulo around 1993 to make the famous team of Banespa sieve and then just grew. Imagine it, boy, arriving alone in Tietê, coming from a small town … Following Gustavo, was summoned to the youth squad and then to adulthood. When Gustavo began to stand out, I put in my head that was something I wanted too. When I was 17 years old, my parents left me to come to St. Paul to try to sieve. My brother was playing at the club, but I say that’s what my life easy. Were more practical issues, like being able to stay at his house, things like that.”

Coach Rezende has also praised Murilo about his versatility…

“Soon after I won the award for best player in the World, the Bernardinho said something about me that I found very nice, ‘The Murillo may not be the best striker, but attacking as anyone, is not the best drawer but draws like nobody’. So I think my greatest asset as a player is to be complete in all essentials.”

Wise words from Murilo…

“I have this obsession of wanting to be the best. Last year was the first time I won an individual title, and three came at once. I think that winning an award is a result of what happens on the court, the group’s performance in competition. But I realize I’m not a player too loud, so I need to strive to be better than others on some fundamentals.”

Finally, he names his idols.

“Always looked up many of the players in my position: Giba, Giovanni, Tande, Nalbert and Dante. Giba has always been a role model for me, because he’s my height and always stood out among the giants.”

A lot of people say that Murilo is the NEW GIBA and we totally agree.

Side Dish: Murilo’s club team, Sesi, has qualified for the semifinal round of the Superliga.

Good luck!
