A Sad Revelation By Former Cuban Men’s Coach

After 15 years, former head coach of the Cuban men’s team, Gilberto Herrera, reveals how their government used the money they won at the 2001 World Grand Champions Cup.

“The team won US$400,000 but our government only gave us $US32,000. We had to split that money to all coaching staff members and to all the players.”

Herrerra also revealed that the government also discharged him from his duties as a punishment for the players who defected in 2001.

On a positive note, the Cuban men’s team has qualified for the 2016 Olympics after 16 years. The women’s program is still struggling since their glorious days in the 90s and early years of the last decade.

Also, the Cuban government is also allowing their players now to play overseas without any consequences. Melissa Vargas and Rolando Cepeda played abroad during the 2015/2016 season. We’ve been informed that Cepeda may head to Korea for the coming year.

Cuba and USA Volleyball may also rekindle their ties and friendly volleyball matches may return on both soil in the near future. We’re so looking forward to this!
