3 Cuban Players Refuse To Play For National Team

WE ARE NOT SURPRISED!

Cuban volleyball fans are so used to this kind of news.

Cuban volleyball continues to lose some of their best players due to politics and policies which seem unfair to their own athletes so no wonder they’ve been struggling for so many years.

According to a reliable source, Leandro Macías, David Fiel and Isbel Mesa (2010 World Championship Silver Medalist) have REFUSED to play for the National Team and they have all been excluded from the roster for the upcoming 2015 FIVB World League.

Losing these 3 players is definitely a huge blow for Cuba.

By the looks of it, they will have a VERY small chance of qualifying for the 2016 Olympics.

Preliminary Roster:

Opposite Hitters: Cepeda, Rendón
Outside Hitters: Jiménez, Uriarte, Romero, Fundora, Alfonso, Hernández
Middle Blockers: Chapman, Osoria, Albo
Setters: Calvo, González
Libero: García

In case you didn’t know, veteran libero Keibel Gutiérrez has retired from the team after the 2014 World Champs.

Aside from the World League, Cuba travels to Detroit, USA in May for the NORCECA Championship. The winner advances to the World Cup in Japan.

A sad news like this one makes us think of all the possibilities if these players did NOT leave Cuba. We are talking about Wilfredo Leon, Robertlandy Simon, Joandry Leal, Michael Sanchez and Osmany Juantorena just to name a few.
