Latest Turkish Volleyball News

Since we discovered a lot of stuff to share about Turkish volleyball, we decided to put them in one post:

#1: NESLIHAN DARNEL HONORS her ex-COACH: The Best Scorer from the 2010 World Champs paid tribute to Jose Francisco Acosta, the former President of Tenerife Marichal. Jose died of cancer 2 years ago. Darnel wore a shirt featuring Quico’s picture during the warm-up session of the match of Eczacibasi VitrA / CV Jamper Aguere LA LAGUNA.

“I spent two seasons with the Club Voleibol of Tenerife from 2006 to 2008. Quico took care of me like a daughter in those years. I was terribly sad when he died of cancer in 2008. I feel very sad to be playing at the “Santiago Martin” sports hall without him. At least, I want to show my gratitude to this close Volleyball friend”.

Awwwww we appreciate the love and respect you have for him girlfriend. We hope others will follow your footsteps, fight against cancer and honor those who fought against it.

On the other hand, DARNEL has been nominated as Turkey’s ATHLETE OF THE YEAR. There are other 12 nominees and we want Nesli to WIN for sure. You can VOTE for Darnel by clicking HERE (English) or HERE (Turkish). Please vote for Nesli and hope she takes the CROWN!

Side Dish:  Neslihan plays in the Turkish League this season for team Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL with Italians Del Core and Mirka Francia (former Cuban).

#2: TURKEY has a JOB OPENING: The Turkish Federation has decided to sack Mehmet Bedestenlioğlu and they’re now looking for a new women’s coach. This is a shocker! We thought he did a good job of leading Turkey to 6th place (Turkey’s best finish!) at the World Champs. Well, we guess the Federation wants to take their women’s team to another unknown direction.

Just a suggestion, please require to new coach to train 2 more hitters who are as effective as Darnel to increase Turkey’s chances of winning. Darnel cannot do it alone.

#3: Russia’s BELGOROD PUNISHED MILJKOVIC & FRIENDS: The most publicized club team team in the world suffered a shocking defeat against the Russians! Ouch! Miljkovic, Geric, Marshall, Batur & Fenerbahce lost in straight sets against a team of Russians without any superstar (Belgorod has the young MUSERSKIY ). This is the match report from CEV.lu:

Lokomotiv BELGOROD has not lost any single match to a Turkish team since the Russians started competing – some years ago – in the European Cups. And tonight the guys around legendary disciplinarian Gennady Shipulin stretched this tradition by defeating – in straight sets – Fenerbahce ISTANBUL in front of their own fans. Before the start of the game, it was pretty clear that the winner of the match would have turned into the one and only leader of Pool E and this circumstance made the competitors assume some additional responsibility. Probably, this situation was easier for Fenerbahce ISTANBUL than for Lokomotiv, as the Russian fans were waiting only for a victory from their team. Three weeks ago Lokomotiv had failed to make a triumphal comeback in the CEV Champions League as they lost the first round match at home against TOURS VB. And tonight the spectators in the “Cosmos” arena were longing not just for a victory, but for a straight sets victory, especially since in the past few years no Turkish team had been able to score a single set in Belgorod. With tonight’s win, Lokomotiv BELGOROD claims the leadership in Pool E regardless of the result coming out from tomorrow’s game starring TOURS VB and Sisley TREVISO.

Since the very beginning of the game, each team was trying to get the upper hand with powerful serves. A flurry of mistakes was to be seen on both sides of the court but eventually the guests were a little bit more consistent and moved up 9:13 and 11:15. However, as veteran Stanislav Dineykin went to the serving area, the “Lions” closed the gap and could leave Fenerbahce behind. Enjoying some space left open in the middle, Lokomotiv’s setter Sergey Bagrey conveyed the ball to his middle blockers whenever it was possible. Sychev and Muserskiy were attacking with 100% of efficiency during this part of the set. Though Fenerbahce’s players could earn a set-ball for their team, Ilinykh easily spiked through the Turkish triple block and then he decided the set with two cannon-like serves. The second and third sets were dictated by the “Lions” who took a gigantic lead, sometimes up to 8 points. In the second set Fenerbahce’s chase was almost successful, but in the third set nobody could stop the Russian “train”. Russian giant Dmitriy Muserskiy (218 cm tall) was finally the best scorer of the match with 15 points. Just like in the match against Sisley TREVISO, he spiked successfully both from position 3 as well as from the back line. Ivan Miljkovic and Tomislav Coskovic scored 11 points apiece for Fenerbahce.

Congrats to Belgorod!
