A Very Successful Season For Dutch Players

After finishing 4th at last year’s Olympic Games, several Dutch players continued to taste success in their professional careers by winning domestic leagues in Turkey, Brazil and Italy. These are 3 leagues that are part of Volleywood’s “THE BIG 4”. The Russian league completes the list.

Anne Buijs In Brazil

Despite a limited appearance in the final match against Osasco, Anne and Unilever successfully defended their crown in the Brazilian Superliga.

Anne and Unilever are currently in Japan for the FIVB Club World Champs.

No word yet where the outside hitter is playing next season.

Maret Balkestein In Turkey

She initially started the 2016/2017 season in the Italian but was released in December 2016 to join Fenerbahce in the Turkish League. Maret together with Kim Yeon Koung, Natalia Pereira and Nootsara Tomkom, helped Fenerbahce win the Turkish Cup and the Turkish League.

Maret’s future is still TBD. She has not announced her next destination.

Dijkema, Plak & Petersen In Italy

They are Dutch version of Charmed and their famous tagline “The Power Of 3”.

Setter Laura Dijkema, Outside hitters Celeste Plak and Judith Pietersen just won the Italian League yesterday and led their Igor Gorgonzola Novara to its first ever title against Modena.

Lonneke Sloetjes In Turkey

It’s worth mentioning that Dutch player Lonneke Sloetjes won the most prestigious club tournament in Europe, the CEV Champions League, with her Turkish club team Vakifbank. On top of that, Lonneke was named as the Best Opposite Hitter of the tournament.

As of press time, Lonneke and team are in Japan for the Club World Champs. They are the favorites to win the crown.

Robin De Kruijf In Italy

Despite a shortened season due to an injury, Robin and Imoco Volley won the Coppa Italia and won the a silver medal at the CEV Champions League.

Yvon Beliën In Italy

The middle blocker and her Italian club team, Modena, finished the season with a silver medal from the Coppa Italia and in the Italian League Finals.

8 out of the 12 players who played in the 2016 Olympics won GOLD in their respective professional careers this season. Can we say Dutch player are such “lucky charms”?

YES! They are!
