Russia’s All Star Volleyball Match

Volleyball fans in Russia were treated to a star studded event over the weekend at the Druzhba Sports Arena & we wished we were there!

There were 2 teams with Russian volleyball superstars Maxim Mikhaylov and the legendary Sergey Tetyukhin as team leaders for each team. The 2 Olympic champions then chose the players to play for their team from the list of players voted by the fans.

Mihaylov’s team won 3-1 (25:23, 25:21, 17:25, 25:20) but the result didn’t matter at all. It was a volleyball tournament where a ref was seen cleaning Bartosz Kurek’s shoes instead of giving blowing his whistle and giving yellow cards.

A great event for fans to watch and enjoy some of the world’s best non-Russian players in the Russian League this season like Matt Anderson, Lukasz Zygadlo and Valerio Vermiglio interacting their homegrown talents.

One of the highlights would have to be former national team libero, Alexey Verbov, hitting balls instead of digging them.

We never knew he could HIT like that! Hah!

All Star team leader and winner, Maxim Mikhaylov was so impressed with the turn out. “The outcome was not the most important thing. We wanted primarily to make a good show. We presented items, which are not seen in normal meetings. Some “numbers” were arranged before the game, but players improvised.” according to the star player of Zenit Kazan, the Russian League’s top team.

Individual awards were given to Pavel Moroz, who recorded the fastest serve, while the best spiker award went to 2012 Olympic gold medalist Dmitry Muserskiy (The player Brazil could not stop in the gold medal match. Remember?)
