Here are some excerpts:

What makes volleyball a difficult sport to play? Beach volleyball requires a lot more than athletic skill to be played. Unlike the indoor game both players have to be highly skilled in order to compete at a high level. By that I mean you have to be able to pass, hit, set, serve and sometimes block in order to be successful – where as indoors a players inability to perform one of these skills can be easily masked by one of the other guys on the court. Aside from the usual effects of the elements such as the sun and wind and surface we are on, sand. We all know how hard it is to walk from the car across the beach to the water. Lets imagine having to run and jump while in the sand and at the same time pass a ball or even go up to hit. Those are what make our sport challenging.

What kind of outfit are you most comfortable playing in? Since I am a male player, board shorts that are very stretchy to accommodate fluid movement without getting snagged around the knees or my quads.

Can you cheat in volleyball, if so, what have some players done? Bad calls and dishonesty are present in all sports.

What kind of training do you have to do to be a successful player? Personally a lot of the training that I do to get ready for the season deals with Olympic lifting such as the clean and jerk, snatch squats, front and back squats etc. to go along with a lot of stability training.

Can a women’s team beat a men’s team? This is an unfair question based on the fact that the net height is different and the amount of power men can generate across the board aren’t even comparable, assuming of course we are talking about top level beach athletes.

Why did you become a volleyball player? I started playing volleyball in high school to make myself a quicker more explosive basketball player. Flash forward to now, a collegiate championship at UCLA, a 3 year pro indoor career in Europe spanning 5 countries, a beach career that had be playing for USA in 3 different countries — volleyball has opened so many doors and introduced me to some of my best friends I will have for life. I have learned a lot from the game, the legends, the current super stars and everyone associated with the sport that I will forever be grateful.

What other sports have you played? I played one year of professional basketball in Europe after graduating from UCLA and then resumed my volleyball career.
