Finally, the wait is over!

Our Italian correspondent, Verena Guidi, was and still remains as one of the luckiest volleyball fans in the world to interview the Bulgarian superstar face to face in Trento. She had a long chat with the outside hitter and so we decided to release the interview in several parts.

I meet Matey Kaziyski in a cold afternoon (of the end of February) in his Trento. He walks towards me crossing the main square of the town and even if he is still far from me, I can easily recognize him thanks to his 203 cm. From the first time he agreed with pleasure and kindness to the proposal of this interview and to join all the great players that collaborate with Volleywood, and so here we are…ready for a nice chat!

Matey, the weekend of the CL Final 4 has just passed…does the defeat with Dinamo Moscow still burn? In your opinion, what didn’t work, tie-break in the first game or the golden set in the return one?

We could;ve made it in both occasions, but I think we had the wrong attitude versus Moscow. We could’ve won, perhaps even in the fourth set. No doubt it still burns, my teammates and I really wanted to get until the end of the competition. Trento didn’t suffer from it too much since we still have another great goal (Italian League) to concentrate on. Italian Playoffs are coming and we can’t afford to think too much about that defeat.

Thinking about F4 formula, what is your opinion about the four teams that reached it?

M: Teams are quite strong but it would have been even better with us!

Are we allowed to say that the strongest teams (Trento and Macerata) stayed home?

M: We are very strong as well as Macerata, this is the formula and it serves to make the show/exhibition international, otherwise every year the final would be monopolized by Italy and Russia. That’s why I agree with the formula that plans mandatory matches among teams from the same nation.

What do you think about the most famous golden set?

At this moment in time I can tell you that it is bulls**t! But more in general, it has both positive and negative aspects, it’s like the V-day (the name of the single final game that assigned the Italian Scudetto in 2010, 2011 and 2012, editor’s note), it promotes the show for the public but it is odd, the strongest team doesn’t always wins because everything can happen.

The expiry date of your contract with Trento is still quite far, but would you be ever able to play with another team here in Italy?

I don’t know, it depends. To be honest, it is very hard, but never say never. I do not even rule out that I might end my career here, I hope I will play still for many years.

Hot topic in Bulgaria. Do you still believe that your sacrifice can be useful to change things?

My sacrifice showed that things aren’t going as they should. I regret very much that nothing has changed since then. I still have hope and I will always have it but at the moment there is not much that can be done because the situations is always the same, if not worse. I know I am right and I know things can’t go on like this, and I hope changes will come soon.

During these months several unconfirmed reports have come out about you, like fine threats, disqualifications and so on. Did they upset you or drive you mad?

I was neither upset nor angry, actually I wasn’t even surprised because in Bulgaria it is quite usual that anyone who raises his voice gets this kind of obstacles and I was expecting it since the beginning.

Do you think that one day you will wear your national team uniform again?

I don’t know, not for the moment, even if I always hope for it.

Talking about unconfirmed reports, there was a funny rumor some months ago which affirmed that you would have taken a sabbatical year from Itas Trentino to finish your economic studies.

Let’s say that this rumor was a bit exaggerated. In that moment I felt tired and I was saying that I needed to “disconnect”. For the matter, I am no longer enrolled at university because I don’t find the right time to dedicate to the studies even if I really would like to.

At the end of the Italian regular season you turned out to be the best aceman. But in which fundamental do you feel more confident and in which less?

I have always been a player well known for the service and the spike. Perhaps I feel less confident in reception, even if I feel really improved lately. Lots of people say that spending last summer “at home” did me a lot of good, but in my opinion this improvement depends on the fact that this year we are not changing any more the ball (whereas Italian Men League used to adopt Molten balls up to last year), which was giving me troubles. Anyway, it has been lots of years now since I pushed on my reception; at the beginning I used to be the third receiver, the one who was excluded from reception anytime it was possible, but now receiving is an habit and we usually have three receivers. To become a spiker-receiver has been a long personal struggle for me in these years, as many coaches aimed at making me an opposite, or a setter, and indeed I tried these roles at high levels.

But this would have been a waste or silly to convert you to setting?

Well… I had a nice time setting. (laughs)

We can easily see and understand that you and Stoytchev are really close. How is your relationship?

We are very bound, and we are close friends also out of the court. We are sharing a long and beautiful path. By now we understand very well and know lots of things each other.

And it is also very nice to see that during time outs Rado takes you apart and talks to you in Bulgarian?

And thank goodness you cannot understand what he says!

Does he yell at you?

Yes he does! But only to be faster and clearer, we comprehend better when he has to say something personal.

Who is the teammate which you are most connected to?

Answering to this question has always been very hard for me, because we are a great group and we get along very well. In general I may say Birarelli (middle blocker), which I spend lot of time with, and Nikolay Uchikov and Mitar Djuric, as we are from the Slavic group.

Which are your favourite “colleagues”? Do you have an idol?

No, I never had an idol, but for instance I have always admired Sergey Tetyukhin, Giba and his predecessor Nalbert.

On the contrary, how do you feel about the fact that now the idol is you, that you are always besieged by fans at the end of every match? What is your reaction to the great affection towards you?

First of all, it’s a bit strange for me, because I am not changed, I’m always the same player more or less. I appreciate a lot that people esteem and admire me for what I do, it is a great proof of support and love. The contact with the public is extremely important for me and this means that everything I do gets transmitted to people. And then, however, I have this responsibility towards the many people who follow me, I can never ease up because, as I am a public personality, I am always in the spotlight.

No doubt your popularity is global. You are such an idol for the volleyball social media community! Just a few months ago, you won Volleywood’s “My 2012 Volleywood Idol”, then the 2013 Volleyball Globe (another contest organized by the Italian volleyball website volleyball.it with registered voters from all over the world) and then nominated as Bulgaria’s 2012 Player Of The Year for the fourth consecutive year by the famous Bulgarian website sportal.bg. Any thoughts?

I am very lucky to have so many fans who actively participate in social networks. During the last years I have become quite famous, especially in Bulgaria, and these places me a step further, compared to other players who come from countries where volleyball is not so well known.

And don’t forget that you were given the prestigious prize Man of the Year in 2010.

That was too much! For an athlete this prize is more than the top.

Let’s leave aside the technical aspects in order to focus on your personal side. Are you still close to your family and do you miss living in Bulgaria?

Yes and yes. I miss my family but I don’t have a very intense relationship considering that I have been living far from them for a lot of years. It is no longer like it used to be once when we used to keep in touch every week. Obviously, I miss them and I am always very happy when I can come back home for a while but I am used to live away from home. By now I have been living around the world for more than ten years and I can manage my life by myself well.

I read on Twitter a statement by Hugo Conte for his children which impressed me: “Genius is 2% talent and 98% Determination/Hardwork”. In your opinion, is talent or handwork more important to get great achievements?

I think a very fine combination of the two. It happened to me to know lots of people who broke their back working hard but didn’t get to high levels because of the lack of the physical element or something like this. Vice versa I saw people who who were so closed to the top but didn’t reach it because of the lack of diligence. A great balance is needed between these two factors and then, depending on the single athlete, it is necessary to see which prevails.

Which are your best quality and your worst flaw?

As a quality, I can say I have always been a calm and quiet guy. I don’t allow myself to get too much involved by things happening around me. I have always had my feet firmly on the ground and even when I have to face problems, I don’t fall into crisis. As a flaw, I am the first one to admit my laziness, sometimes I could something more in general.

Unlike the great majority of your colleagues, you don’t have a public account neither on Facebook nor on Twitter. You don’t like social media? War against social media?

No, no, nothing like that! I do have Facebook, I opened an account when it just came out only to see what it was but I hardly ever use it. Generally, I am not that kind of guy who manages public pages and writes his personal thoughts on them to maintain this kind of relationship with fans. I don’t think I have something particular or interesting to make you see or listen to, it is not like me. But who knows, one day I may change my mind.

What do you like to do in your (little) spare time?

I try to pull the plug out from volleyball because I have had enough of my duties. I rarely watch other games, usually only when there is a friend of mine playing, just to see if he does well and how he plays. I’m not the kind of player who watches websites and statistics, so I can disconnect a bit. When I can, I go out with friends and I keep in touch with them, maybe with Skype. When we go to away games, I always have my notebook to see a movie or to play.

Hadn’t you become a volleyball player, what would you have liked to do?

I lived that period in which I had to decide what to do with my life. I was quite young when I was given my first volleyball offer to enter the Slavia Sofia men team and at the same time I had been admitted to a very important technical school in Bulgaria. For a moment I risked not to become a volleyball player but I found myself in a crossroad: to make volleyball become a job, with the consequent increase of obligations and training, or to keep on training in a softer way and combine my school commitment? At that point I decided to change school to be able to attend training.

How much did your parents (both former volleyball players) affect your decision?

At that time they stayed close to me but they didn’t pressure me in any way. They let me choose freely.

Would you like to coach one day? Or would you see yourself better in another role, maybe management duties?

I haven’t thought about this very much up to the present, I do not have any idea. Honestly, I don’t see myself in the role of the coach, maybe at a young level to make the spirit of the game, more than the technical aspects, grow the sport with the young ones.

Your career, among clubs and national team, made you travel a lot for work, but if you could wake up tomorrow and take a plane to make a journey, which place would you visit?

I traveled a lot but never went to USA so I’d love to visit them. Otherwise I’d like to come back again to Paris, which is a wonderful city that impressed me a lot.

What is your most beautiful game and the one you remember with more regret?

A game that I remember with great regret is Bulgaria-Cuba during 2010 World Championship, because the defeat for 3-2 prevented us from reaching the semifinals. On the contrary, it is very hard for me to choose the most beautiful one, I played and won lots of fantastic games. Maybe I could indicate the first Scudetto here in Italy in 2008, which was a huge emotion not only for me but for all the team and the town.

Which valuable tip would you give to a young players who want to play professional volleyball?

To play with love, pleasure and passion, because these will let you achieve great things.

Again about tips, what is the most interesting tip you’ve received from a teammate?

Recently Osmany suggested me to have my haircut, and I have already done it!

A genie will grant you three wishes (personal and volleyball wishes), what would they be?

I’d like to have a superpower, like to fly or to teleport, to avoid travels for away games! Talking more seriously, I’d like to see improvements in the condition of my country, we also have lots of problems. Maybe we could begin exactly from the volleyball federation.

Is there a particular song you listen to before playing?

I usually listen to a playlist, but there are too many songs and I don’t have a favourite one. I am not a fixated guy who listen to a specific song before playing to get pumped up, even if sometimes I brush up my passion with Metallica.

What is the most valuable lesson so far you’ve learned from volleyball which you can apply in your personal life?

Volleyball, like every other team sport, teaches you to interact with your teammates, to live with other people, respect others and to transform unity in strength.

What have been your best season on a personal level so far?

Hard to say, but perhaps my first season here in Trento (2007/2008). That was my first experience in Italy, everything was pretty new for me and it was very exciting.

What does Itas Trentino mean for you?

For me Trento represents an achieved desire. At the very beginning, when lots of teams were courting me, everything started from a project, a hope, an idea: to create a group that works hard and obtains results thanks to the efforts made by everybody. We made it and we won a lot. After all these years, I can state we didn’t reach everything, because we could have done even more and we always lacked something to get the perfect year, but, however, we’ve swept the board and we have been taking up a wonderful path, that is not over yet. It has been extraordinary because nobody would predict that since the first time we would have won the Scudetto; the funny aspect about that victory is that the predictions rated us at the sixth/seventh place in the ranking and we were really dazzled because we felt so charged-up and conscious of our potential.

Trento supporters, who perfectly know this path since the beginning, love you and adore you, you are an hero for them, you are the champion who started this great dream off and have become immediately the flag of this team…

In this town I was not simply well accepted, but even more! I have always been well-liked, also when my transfer wasn’t official and despite the quite serious problems I had with Bulgarian Federation and FIVB; it is such a unique experience as it is not so easy that a stranger gets to a place and is immediately well loved. The bond between me, the team and the town is really tight, people are part of our victories; I don’t know how many teams can be so proud of such supporters.

No doubt the love between Matey and his fans is a returned affection. People loves him as a person and as a player for his moral standing and he’s able to convey all this affection in push and motivation to do better and better, without being sated. Matey as a man is exactly as you see him, he is crystal clear as a drop of the snow that covers the mountains of his loved Trento, and talks with a great serenity and frankness that you can see through his deeply green eyes.

Incontro Matey Kaziyski in un freddo pomeriggio di fine febbraio nella sua Trento. Viene verso di me attraversando la piazza principale della città e già da lontanissimo, grazie ai suoi 203 cm, lo riconosco. Ha accettato fin da subito con piacere e con grande gentilezza l’idea di questa intervista e di entrare a far parte dei tanti campioni che collaborano con Volleywood, ed eccoci qua, pronti per una bella chiacchierata…

Allora Matey, ci siamo da poco lasciati alle spalle il weekend della Final4 di Champions League…Brucia ancora la sconfitta con la Dinamo Mosca? Secondo te cosa non ha funzionato, il tie break all’andata o il golden set al ritorno?

Potevamo farcela in entrambe le occasioni, ma secondo me quello che abbiamo sbagliato è stato l’approccio che abbiamo avuto nella gara di Mosca, potevamo vincere là, forse addirittura al quarto set. Certamente brucia ancora, sia io che i miei compagni volevamo arrivare fino in fondo. Ormai è andata come è andata e la squadra non ne ha risentito troppo visto che abbiamo un altro grande obiettivo sul quale concentrarci. I playoff del Campionato italiano si avvicinano e non possiamo permetterci di pensare troppo a quella sconfitta.

Pensando alla formula della Final4, che considerazione ti sei fatto delle quattro squadre che ci sono arrivate?

Sono squadre abbastanza forti ma con noi sarebbe stato ancora meglio!

Possiamo dire che le due più forti (Trento e Macerata) sono rimaste a casa?!

Mah, sia noi che Macerata siamo molto forti, la formula è questa e serve a rendere lo spettacolo internazionale altrimenti ogni anno le finali sarebbero monopolizzate da Italia e Russia. Sono quindi d’accordo con la formula che prevede gli scontri obbligati tra squadre della stessa nazione.

Cosa pensi invece del celeberrimo golden set?

Adesso come adesso ti dico che è una grandissima cavolata! Però in generale è una cosa che ha aspetti sia negativi che positivi, è un po’ come il V-day, favorisce lo spettacolo per il pubblico ma è strano, non sempre vince la squadra effettivamente più forte perché può succedere di tutto.

La scadenza del tuo contratto con Trento è ancora lontana, ma pensi che riusciresti mai a giocare in un altro club qui in Italia?

Non lo so, dipende. A dire la verità è molto difficile, ma non si sa mai. Non escludo nemmeno di rimanere qua fino a fine carriera, spero di giocare ancora molti anni.

Argomento scottante: Bulgaria. Rimani ancora convinto che il tuo sacrifico possa servire a cambiare le cose?

Il mio sacrificio ha fatto vedere che le cose non vanno come dovrebbero andare, mi dispiace tantissimo che poi non sia cambiato nulla. Io ci spero ancora, ci spero sempre, però al momento c’è poco da fare perché la situazione è sempre la stessa, se non peggio. Io so di aver ragione e so che le cose non possono continuare in quella maniera, e spero che col tempo ci siano dei cambiamenti.

In questi mesi sono uscite tante indiscrezioni su di te, tra minacce di multe, squalifiche e quant’altro. Ti hanno turbato? O innervosito?

Né innervosito né arrabbiato, anzi non mi hanno nemmeno sorpreso, perché in Bulgaria è piuttosto normale che chi alza la voce si ritrova questi tipi di ostacoli e io me lo aspettavo fin dall’inizio.

Pensi che un giorno tornerai a vestire la maglia della nazionale?

Non lo so, per adesso no, anche se la speranza c’è sempre.

A proposito di indiscrezioni giornalistiche, qualche mese fa era stata messa in giro la voce piuttosto buffa secondo la quale ti saresti preso un anno sabbatico dall’Itas per terminare i tuoi studi in economia…

Diciamo che la notizia era un po’ esagerata, era un momento in cui mi sentivo stanco e dicevo di sentire la necessità di staccare un po’. Tra l’altro non sono più iscritto all’università perché non trovo davvero il tempo necessario per dedicarmi allo studio anche se mi piacerebbe molto.

Al termine della regular season italiana sei risultato il miglior battitore del campionato. Ma tu in quale fondamentale ti senti più sicuro e in quale meno?

Io sono sempre stato un giocatore conosciuto per l’attacco e la battuta. Forse mi sento meno sicuro in ricezione, anche se ultimamente mi sento molto migliorato. Molti dicono che mi ha fatto bene l’estate “a casa”, ma in realtà secondo me il miglioramento dipende dal fatto che da quest’anno non facciamo più il cambio di pallone (mentre fino all’anno scorso il campionato italiano maschile utilizzava il Molten), cosa che mi metteva abbastanza in difficoltà. Sono comunque molti anni che spingo sulla mia ricezione; all’inizio ero sempre il “terzo ricevitore”, quello che si escludeva dalla linea di ricezione appena possibile, adesso ricevere è ormai un’abitudine e spesso riceviamo a 3. Diventare uno schiacciatore-ricevitore è stata per me una battaglia personale durata anni, perché molti allenatori puntavano a farmi diventare un opposto, o anche palleggiatore, ed effettivamente ho provato questi ruoli anche ad alti livelli.

Sarebbe stato uno spreco però!

Insomma…avevo un bel palleggio! (ride)

Si vede e si intuisce che tu e Stoytchev siete molto legati. Com’è il vostro rapporto?

Siamo parecchio legati, siamo molto amici anche fuori dal campo. Stiamo condividendo un percorso lungo e bellissimo. Ormai ci capiamo bene e sappiamo molto l’uno dell’altro.

Poi è anche molto bello vedere che durante i time out, Rado ti prende da parte e ti parla in bulgaro.

E meno male che voi non capite quello che mi dice!

Ti sgrida??

Sì! Ma lo fa per parlare più veloce e più chiaro, ci capiamo meglio quando mi deve dire qualcosa di personale.

Invece tra i compagni, qual è quello a cui sei più legato?

È sempre stato difficile per me rispondere a questa domanda, perché noi siamo un bel gruppo e stiamo molto bene insieme. In generale potrei dire Lele Birarelli, con il quale passo moltissimo tempo, e con Nikolay e Mitar, visto che noi tre formiamo il gruppo slavo.

Quali sono i “colleghi” che preferisci? Hai un idolo?

No, io non ho mai avuto un idolo, però per esempio ho sempre ammirato Sergey Tetyukhin, Giba, e prima di lui mi piaceva molto anche Nalbert.

Invece, al contrario, cosa pensi del fatto che adesso l’idolo sei tu, che vieni sempre assalito dai fan a fine partita? Qual è la tua reazione al grande affetto che c’è sempre nei tuoi confronti?

Innanzitutto per me è un po’ strano, perché io non sono cambiato, sono rimasto sempre lo stesso giocatore più o meno . Mi fa tanto piacere vedere che la gente mi stima e mi ammira per quello che faccio, è veramente una prova di incoraggiamento e di grande affetto. Il contatto con il pubblico è veramente importante per me e vuol dire che tutto quello che faccio si trasmette alla gente. E poi comunque sento sempre una sorta di responsabilità verso le tante persone che mi seguono, non ci si può mai rilassare perché in quanto personaggio pubblico hai sempre una luce puntata addosso.

Sempre a proposito di popolarità, sei un vero mito per il popolo del web! Qualche mese fa hai stravinto il concorso su Facebook “My 2012 Volleywood Idol”, ultimamente hai vinto anche i Volleybal Globe, concorso indetto dal famoso sito italiano volleyball.it che ha visto votanti iscritti da tutte le parti del mondo; e poco dopo è arrivata la notizia che sei stato eletto giocatore bulgaro dell’anno per il quarto anno consecutivo dal famoso sito bulgaro sportal.bg.

Sono molto fortunato ad avere così tanti fans che partecipano attivamente sui social network. Negli ultimi anni sono diventato particolarmente famoso, specialmente in Bulgaria, e questo mi rende un passo avanti ad altri giocatori che magari appartengono a paesi dove la pallavolo è meno nota.

Cosa ti piace fare nel (poco) tempo libero che hai?

Cerco di staccarmi dalla pallavolo perché ne ho già abbastanza dei miei impegni. Rare volte mi capita di vedere delle partite, di solito solo se c’è qualche amico che gioca, per vedere come sta e come gioca. Non sono uno che guarda le statistiche e segue i siti, così posso staccare un po’. Quando posso esco con degli amici e mi tengo in contatto con loro, magari su Skype; quando siamo in trasferta, ho sempre con me il mio pc per vedere qualche film o giocare.

Se non fossi diventato atleta professionista, cosa ti sarebbe piaciuto fare nella vita?

Ho avuto quel periodo in cui dovevo decidere cosa fare della mia vita, ero abbastanza giovane quando mi arrivò la prima proposta pallavolistica, per entrare a far parte della squadra maschile dello Slavia Sofia, e allo stesso tempo ero stato anche ammesso in un’importante scuola tecnica in Bulgaria. Per un attimo ho rischiato di non diventare un pallavolista… Mi sono trovato davanti ad un bivio: far diventare la pallavolo un lavoro, con il conseguente aumento di impegni e di allenamenti oppure continuare ad allenarmi in maniera più leggera e coniugare anche l’impegno scolastico. A quel punto ho deciso di cambiare scuola per poter seguire gli allenamenti.

In questa decisione i tuoi genitori (entrambi ex giocatori) hanno influito?

No, in quel momento i miei genitori mi sono stati vicini ma non hanno messo pressioni in nessun senso. Mi hanno lasciato scegliere liberamente.

Ti piacerebbe un giorno allenare? O ti vedresti meglio in un altro ruolo, tipo dirigenziale?

Fino ad oggi ci ho pensato poco, non ne ho proprio idea. Sinceramente non mi vedo molto nel ruolo dell’allenatore, magari a livello giovanile per far crescere nei ragazzi lo spirito del gioco piuttosto che la tecnica.

La tua carriera, tra club e nazionale, ti ha sempre portato a viaggiare molto per lavoro, ma se domattina potessi svegliarti e prendere un aereo per fare un viaggio di piacere, quale luogo ti piacerebbe visitare?

Tra i tanti viaggi che ho fatto, non sono mai stato negli Stati Uniti e mi piacerebbe molto visitarli. Altrimenti mi piacerebbe tornare a Parigi, che è una città bellissima che mi ha colpito tanto.

Qual è la tua partita più bella e quella che ricordi con più rammarico?

Una partita che ricordo con molto dispiacere è Bulgaria-Cuba del Mondiale 2010, perché la sconfitta per 3 a 2 ci ha impedito di accedere alla semifinale. Invece è davvero difficile per me scegliere la più bella, ho giocato e vinto tante bellissime partite; forse potrei indicare il primo scudetto qui in Italia nel 2008, che è stato una grandissima emozione non solo per me ma per tutta la squadra e la città.

Che consiglio daresti ai ragazzi giovani che si avvicinano alla pallavolo?

Di giocare con amore, con piacere e con passione, perché permetteranno loro di compiere grandi cose.

Sempre a proposito di consigli, qual è quello più particolare o interessante che hai ricevuto da un tuo compagno?

Osmany ultimamente mi ha consigliato di tagliarmi i capelli, e questo l’ho già fatto!

Se potessi esprimere tre desideri, personali o professionali, quali sarebbero?

Mi piacerebbe avere un superpotere, tipo volare o il teletrasporto, per evitare le trasferte! Parlando più seriamente, mi piacerebbe che la situazione nel mio paese migliorasse, abbiamo anche noi tanti problemi…magari si potrebbe cominciare proprio dalla nostra federazione.

C’è una canzone particolare che ascolti prima di giocare?

In generale ascolto una playlist di canzoni, ma sono tantissime e non ne ho una particolare. Non sono uno fissato che prima delle partite ascolta una determinata canzone per caricarsi, anche se ogni tanto rispolvero la mia passione per i Metallica.

Qual è la lezione più importante che la pallavolo ti ha insegnato e che poi hai applicato nella tua vita?

La pallavolo, come tutti gli sport di squadra, ti insegna ad interagire con i compagni, a vivere con gli altri rispettandoli e saper stare in gruppo, e a trasformare l’unità in forza.

Qual è stata la tua miglior stagione a livello personale fin qui?

Difficile dirlo, ma forse proprio la prima stagione a Trento (2007/2008). Era la mia prima esperienza in Italia, era tutto nuovo per me ed è stato molto emozionante.

Cosa significa l’Itas Trentino per te?

Trento per me rappresenta un desiderio realizzato. All’inizio di tutto, quando molte squadre mi corteggiavano, tutto è partito da un progetto, da una speranza, da un’idea: quella di creare un gruppo che lavora duro ed ottiene risultati grazie agli sforzi di tutti. Ce l’abbiamo fatta e abbiamo vinto tantissimo. Dopo tutti questi anni posso dire non che abbiamo raggiunto tutto, perché si poteva fare anche di più e ci è sempre mancato qualcosa per fare l’anno perfetto, ma comunque abbiamo stravinto e abbiamo fatto un bellissimo percorso, che non è ancora finito. È stata una cosa straordinaria perché nessuno si aspettava che già dal primo anno vincessimo lo scudetto; l’aspetto curioso di quella vittoria è che le previsioni di inizio anno ci quotavano al sesto/settimo posto e noi siamo rimasti molto stupiti perché eravamo carichissimi e consapevoli del nostro potenziale.

I tifosi di Trento, che ben conoscono questo percorso sin dalle origini, ti amano e ti adorano, per loro sei un eroe, sei il campione che ha dato il via ad un grande sogno ed è diventato fin da subito la bandiera di questa squadra…

In questa città io non son stato ben accettato, di più! Sono sempre stato benvoluto, anche prima che il trasferimento fosse ufficiale, e nonostante i problemi abbastanza pesanti che ho avuto con la federazione bulgara e con l’FIVB; è un’esperienza davvero unica perché non è così facile che uno straniero arrivi in un posto e sia subito così amato. Il legame tra me e la squadra e la città è molto forte, la gente si è appassionata alle nostre vittorie, non so quante altre squadre possono essere così orgogliose di un pubblico del genere.

Sicuramente, l’amore tra Matey e i suoi tifosi è un affetto più che contraccambiato; la gente lo ama come persona e come atleta per la sua grande caratura morale e lui riesce a trasformare tutto questo affetto in spinta e motivazione a fare sempre meglio, senza mai essere sazio. Matey come persona è così come lo si vede, è limpido come una goccia della neve che ricopre le montagne della sua Trento, e parla con una grande tranquillità e franchezza che si può leggere nei suoi occhi verdissimi.
