Teams Set Aside Rivalry For Player With Leukemia

Per fox10phoenix.com:

There are some big high school rivalries in the Valley, but two fierce rivals in the east Valley came together to support a teammate and competitor who is having a tough fight off the court.

They are two of the top volleyball teams in the state and even though both Hamilton and Gilbert High Schools want a victory tonight they are hoping for an even bigger win, one for Sierra Guyton a Hamilton varsity player suddenly struck with Leukemia earlier this year.

Sierra has been getting treatment ever since, and her teammates and volleyball families from all over the state gathered to raise money through raffles, auctions, and t-shirt sales. The illness has kept her from playing, but Sierra was never far from the game she loves, taking her place on Coach Sharon Vanis’ bench almost every match this year to support her teammates.

“Sierra’s a fighter, her family has been great, the kids have been great. If there’s a kid that’s going to beat it, it’s Sierra. She’s got the right mentality for it too,” said Coach Sharon Vanis.

Sierra’s mother says the prognosis is good, and Sierra plans on being on the volleyball court next season.
