Sugary Sports Drinks

This is from Daily Ab Tips

Recovery drinks are vital for ensuring that the muscles you work out during exercise receive the replenishment they need.

What is in a good recovery drink?

A recovery drink should be high in sugar to replenish your electrolytes. Yes, I just recommended sugar. Sugar will supply your muscles with the energy they need faster than a protein shake. This is why sports drinks like Gatorade have plenty of sugar.

Keep in mind that it is only when your muscles are craving energy that I recommend a sugary drink. Consuming sugar any other time is ill advised. See the video below for the bitter truth about the effects of Sugar on the body.

Protein is important for recovery, but takes longer to digest than a sugary recovery drink. Since muscles repair during sleep it is smart to drink a protein shake right before bed. Fruit smoothies are my favorite kind of recovery drink, but these take a minute to prepare, so I will often down a glass of juice as I make these.

I have even read that it is okay to consume soda after a workout. I recommend against this, but I do recommend you find a drink that you really enjoy, and drink it only after a workout as a reward.

Volleywood Thoughts: We will limit our sugar intake moving forward. We always drink Powerade over Gatorade since P has less calories and less sugar than G. Regardless, we will only consume sugar when needed.
