The dig is one of the most important moves in the game of volleyball. Digging is the act of preventing the ball from hitting the floor on your side of the court. Passing Drill

The aim of volleyball is to keep the ball in motion. Digging is a defensive move meant to keep the ball in the air after it has been lobbed over the net from the other side. Before you learn to dig you must learn to pass. A basic passing drill requires at least two players. Spread yourselves a good distance from one another. Commence the drill by tossing easy passes to one another. The purpose of the drill is to improve your technique of passing by giving you a feel for the strength, energy, and motions needed for an effective pass. After a specific number of repetitions, you should switch positions. The exercise can also be made to go at a faster pace by keeping the ball in continuous motion with light touches that send it from one person to the next.

Team-on-3-Digging Drill

This digging drill is used to help players respond to serves. The drill requires at least four people. Place three players on one side and a server on the other. Task the server with serving the ball in ways that are unpredictable, so as to test the range of digging moves by the players on the defensive side. You can vary this drill by putting two or three players on the offensive side. The latter should set and pass the ball around before making a spontaneous serve. This gives defenders an opportunity to sharpen their reflexes. It also gives them more practice in doing the kind of moving, shuffling, and digging that is required during an actual game.

Wall Digging Drill

Here is a drill you can do on your own. To perform the drill you must square up against a wall. Take the ball, and then toss, swing, and dig as it comes back to you. Increase the power and speed of your swing in order to challenge yourself further. You can practice both underhand and overhand digs during the drill. You can toss high, swing high, and then set as the ball comes back at you. Conversely, you can hit lower and harder, and dig faster in order to refine your underhand technique Doing squats and other exercises that mimic the motions made during digging will help keep your muscles in shape. These can be done prior to drills as a way of warming and loosening your limbs and legs. Volleyball digging drills will give you the confidence and physical conditioning you need to become an effective player.
