The Philippines Introduces A New “Starting 6” System

This is VERY interesting.

The top domestic league in the country, The Philippine Super Liga, has introduced a new system for teams this season which started last week. The new system REQUIRES teams to make use of all their players and this is how it works:

This means each squad will field its first six (6 regular players and a libero) to play in the first set, then field its second six (players who didn’t start in the first set and a libero) in the second set. In the third, fourth and fifth sets, coaches can use any combinations of players on the court.

One of the officials fully supports this new rule.

“We welcome the new rule because as a former player you always want the chance to get to play. There are other players who have the skills but aren’t really given the chance to shine. It just elevates the game more. It highlights the skill sets of the players that don’t get to see much playing time. We all know volleyball is a game of momentum. One set could change everything.” -CocoLife team official Joshua Ylaya.

Other new rules introduced are:

In the first 2 sets, substitutions will only be allowed after the second technical timeout unless a starting player gets injured. Regular substitutions apply in sets 3, 4 and 5.

The warm-up area will be located behind the team’s benches.

Each team should assign two moppers to wipe and clean their side of the court during technical timeouts, regular timeouts and set intervals.

The FIVB sanctioned Philippine Super Liga (PSL) is the first semi-professional corporate club volleyball league in the Philippines founded in 2013.
