NCAA Women’s Volleyball May Use Video Challenge

February 21st, 2015

It’s been APPROVED!

Yay!

Per ncaa.org:

PROP approves experimental instant replay challenges in women’s volleyball.

The Big 12, Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences can utilize the rule in conference matches only.

Instant replay reviews are coming to women’s volleyball on an experimental basis.

The Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved an instant replay challenge rule for the 2015 season during a conference call on Wednesday. The Big 12, Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences will be allowed to use the experimental rule in conference matches only, provided that a school has the necessary equipment and personnel to utilize the rule.

Schools in the participating conferences will not be required to purchase new equipment, and there will not be a minimum requirement for the number of cameras used during each match.

Coaches will be permitted three challenges per match, and those challenges will have no effect on the number of allowed timeouts a team has remaining. The challenge must be lodged immediately following the rally and before the first referee’s arm is extended to start the service for the next point.

Only one challenge per rally will be allowed.

Coaches will be allowed to request instant replay challenges only to review these instances:

If the ball landed in or out.

If the ball made contact with a player.

If a net violation occurred.

Foot faults on a serve.

Given the increased availability of technology, the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Rules Committee believes the experimental rule will allow officials another avenue to make the correct call.

Schools implementing the experimental rule will be required to submit extensive data to the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Rules Committee at the conclusion of the season.

Thoughts?

February 4th, 2015

This is GREAT NEWS and we hope the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel will approve it.

Per ncaa.com:

The NCAA Women’s Volleyball Rules Committee on Thursday modified a recommendation for an experimental instant replay challenge rule that can be implemented in the 2015 season.

The committee, which met via conference call, changed the proposal to allow coaches three instant replay challenges per match. The challenge must be made before the referee extends his or her arm to start the next point. The previous recommendation would have allowed coaches two instant replay challenges per set.

Before a rules proposal becomes official, it must be approved by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel, which is scheduled to discuss women’s volleyball recommendations via conference call on Feb. 18.

How coaches would formally make the request to challenge a call will be decided at a later date, although some committee members believe some sort of visual aid should be used.

The players would have to remain on the court while the instant replay review takes place.

Coaches could request instant replay challenges only to review:

If a ball landed in or out.

If the ball made contact with a player.

If a net violation, as defined in the rule book, occurred.

Foot faults on a serve.

The referee will decide whether the replay evidence confirms or overturns the original call. If the replay is inconclusive, the original call will stand.

If approved, the instant replay rule can be used only in conference games at schools that are able to provide the necessary equipment and personnel. The Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences have requested to use the rule next season.

Seriously, we hope it gets approved and we can avoid something like (forward to 0:35) this from happening again:
