Floating Stadium For 2015 Beach VB World Champs?

YES! YES YES!

The Dutch organizers are making it happen!

Per FIVB.ORG:

The famous Dutch cruise ship ‘SS Rotterdam’ in Rotterdam has been announced as the fourth venue of the FIVB World Championships Beach Volleyball 2015 in The Netherlands. The venue was announced today at a press conference on the steamship itself. The Hague, Amsterdam and Apeldoorn are the other three hosting cities.

The venue in Rotterdam was the last one of four to be revealed and all cities have now announced their location to stage the FIVB World Championships Beach Volleyball which will run from June 26th – July 5th, 2015.

The venue in The Hague, where the Finals will take place, will be a floating stadium on the well know pond ‘Hofvijver’ near the Parliament. The Dam Square in Amsterdam and Market Square in Apeldoorn are have also been named as venues and will be situated in the crowded heart of the city.

The former flagship of the Holland – America overseas route, Rotterdam will provide excellent facilities such as a media centre, hospitality as well overnight accommodation for players and special guests. On the quay in front of the steamship there will be plenty of space for building a stadium with a capacity of 2,000 and several training courts. Also many side-events will take place in the area during the event. Matches in Rotterdam will be played from June 27 to July 2 with the quarterfinals ending proceedings in the city. The SS Rotterdam will put in 200 boat hosts to look after visitors, fans and guests.

“Looking at the visuals I can only be proud of the fact that Rotterdam delivers a venue like this”, said Alderman Adriaan Visser of the City of Rotterdam. “The ship, the river and the view of the skyline of Rotterdam compose a magnificent scene. We can absolutely match the venues in the other three cities. With this we prove to be a real City of Sports.”

Rotterdam will use the FIVB World Championships to bring beach volleyball to the city, in particular the youth.

“The popularity of Beach Volleyball is still growing,” Visser added. “We have already started a development program at schools and will continue to do that.”

Tournament director Bas van de Goor also announced that tickets will go on sale in January 2015.

“A hundred days before the opening ceremony the entry list will be announced as well the playing schedule in all four cities,” he added.
