Brigada Cuba!

A very young team but very talented!

Coach Juan Carlos Gala’s 2011 “brigada” has been training in Peru to prepare for the 2011 season. The Cuban squad led by the scoring machine, Kenia Carcases, is scheduled to compete at the 2011 Volleymasters Tournament in Switzerland (June) and after a 2 year absence they will compete at the 2011 World Grand Prix.

Together with Japan, we think Cuba is the other team to watch this year.

2011 Cuba Roster:

Outside Hitters: Kenia Carcaces, Yoana Palacio and Wilma Salas

Middle Blockers: Rachel Sánchez, Gyselle de la Caridad Silva, Rosanna Giel and Daimara Lescay

Setters: Yusidey Silié and Ana Yilian Cleger

Plus these youngsters: Alena Rojas, Emily Borrell, Yenifer Álvarez, Dayamí Sánchez and Eglys Sasvin.

We’re a bit shocked that Yanelis Santos is not on the roster nor Rosir Calderon who made headlines a few months ago when she signed on to play for Volero Zurich, a Swiss club team, during the 2011/2012 season.

Still no signs of Nancy Carrillo.

What about setter/opposite Daimi Ramirez? She played in the Brazilian League this season and was her team’s best scorer.

Regla Torres is the assistant coach of the team. Sometimes when we see her on TV, we want to tell her to put on a Cuban uniform and play. We just really miss her. We bet you miss her too. We also miss Tai Aguero (who is on the 2011 roster for Italy), Yumilka Ruiz and Regla Bell (who is one of the best scorers in the Spanish League this season).

We miss all of them! We’re also excited to see more of this new Cuban squad.
