Rest In Peace Patrick.

An All-EIVA middle attacker for George Mason died Sunday following injuries he sustained in a train accident.

The George Mason athletics department announced Monday that Patrick Sibley, a senior on the Patriots men’s volleyball team, died during the weekend in a Metro train-related accident.

Sibley in his only season with George Mason was a 2013 First-Team All-EIVA selection after he led the Patriots in blocks and helped the team reach the EIVA Tournament semifinals. The middle attacker also started 21 matches for George Mason last season and was second on the team with 21 aces.

“Patrick Sibley was a world-class athlete,” coach Fred Chao said in a statement released Monday. “In a brief period of time he quickly developed into a dominant volleyball player. However, it was his love for his teammates and friends that shined the brightest. He had a unique ability to pursue his own goals and ambitions while at the same time fiercely support and encourage his teammates. I am honored to have been his coach.”

Before arriving to George Mason, Sibley spent the 2011 season playing for Sacred Heart as a freshman. Sibley following that season transferred to George Mason and redshirted during the 2012 season.

Sibley’s transfer to George Mason also allowed him to play alongside his older brother, Shaun, last season.

George Mason libero David Lucas said in statement that the entire team is heartbroken by the death of Sibley.

“Patrick demanded the best of himself in everything he did, and he brought the best out of everyone around him,” Lucas said. “Pat’s impact on the volleyball court was unmatched. Yet, his impact in our lives reached far beyond the sport itself. Pat’s laugh was contagious. His smile—which he was rarely seen without—could turn the worst day into a good one. Every single one of his teammates considered him a dear friend. He always put those around him first, and he had a loving heart that will never be equaled nor forgotten.”

Sibley was entering his senior year at George Mason and was an integrative students major with a concentration in advertising.
