Coach Bernardo Rezende Retires From National Team

After 16 years coaching the men’s the national team, Coach Bernardinho Rezende finally decided to retire. The 57 year old made the announcement yesterday during a press conference arranged by the Brazilian Federation (CBV). His successor is Renan Dal Zotto. However, he will remain as the coach of Brazilian women’s club team, Unilever.

If you remember, Rezende revealed that he wants to spend more time with his ailing father.

Rezende’s Achievements

Being the head coach for 16 years, Coach Rezende is no doubt one of the most decorated volleyball coaches of all time.

Under Rezende, Brazil won 3 consecutive World Championship titles (2002, 2006 & 2010). Brazil has never lost the South American Championship since 2001. Brazil has 8 #FIVBWorldLeague Gold medals including 5 consecutive titles (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 & 2007).

The world witnessed the 2 Olympic heartbreaks Brazil suffered, 2008 & 2012. USA led by Stanley beat them at the 2008 Games. 4 years later, the shocking lost to Russia in London after winning the first 2 sets. All the heartbreaks are gone now since the ended his career with a GOLD IN RIO to add to his 2004 gold medal.

Bruno’s Hug Changed It All

In an emotional interview with Globo Esporte, Coach Rezende reveals the moment that made him realized it’s time to say goodbye. It was when his son, Bruno, hugged him right after winning the gold medal last year in Rio.

“When Bruninho hugged me at the end of the Olympics, that’s when I thought about leaving my position for the first time in 23 years.The realization felt REAL.”

In case you didn’t know, Rezende coached the women’s team from 1990-2000. At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, he led the team to win Brazil’s first Olympic medal in women’s volleyball by taking home the bronze. The same achievement 4 years later in Sydney.

Rezende introduced to the world Virna Dias, Leila Barros, Erika Coimbra, Fofao and many more.
