BELO HORIZONTE PROUD HOST OF FIVB VOLLEYBALL MEN’S CLUB WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2014 edition of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship will be held in the inspirational Mineirinho Arena in Belo Horizonte city in Brazil from May 5 to 10.

Hosts and current FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship title holders Sada Cruzeiro, automatically qualify for this year’s event. Sada Cruzeiro, who were silver medallists in the 2012/2013 Brazilian Super League, also finished second to Italy’s Trentino in the 2012 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship held in Doha, Qatar.

In this year’s tournament, the host club will be joined by the Continental Champion teams from South America, Europe, Africa and Asia in addition to the NORCECA nominated team. The participation of two teams – jointly decided by the FIVB and the organisers – will complete the line-up of clubs taking part in the Championship.

Trentino held the men’s title from 2009 to 2012 continuing the outstanding tradition of Italian volleyball which has seen Italian clubs win eight of the nine editions of the tournament.

WOMEN

ZURICH SET TO HOST 2014 EDITION OF WOMEN’S CLUB WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Zurich will open its doors to the volleyball family for a second year running when it welcomes six of the world’s premier clubs for the eighth edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship from May 7 to 11.

In this year’s tournament host club Volero Zurich will be joined by the Continental champions from South America, Europe and Asia. The participation of two teams – jointly decided by the FIVB and the organisers – will complete the line-up of clubs taking part in the Championship.

Last year’s tournament saw VakifBank Istanbul graduate from European to world champions. In front of a packed Saalsporthalle in Zurich, the Turkey representatives beat their South American counterparts Unilever Volei from Brazil in straight sets 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-16) to capture their first ever FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship title.

Unlike the Men’s Club World Championship, the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship has had seven different winners from four different countries. Brazil has been represented on the winner’s podium three times, while Azerbaijan, Italy and Turkey have all had clubs step on the top podium once.
