Philippines’ Spike For A Cause

In an effort to raise donations and resources for those affected by Typhoon Yolanda, Solar Sports and Sports Core have organized Spike for a Cause: A benefit game for Yolanda survivors, which will take place on December 8 (Sunday) at 4:00PM at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The game – which will be a 21-point, five-set system – will pit the best local volleyball players in the country (Team Solar Sports) against the imports (Team Score) that have been participating in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix.

Here are the line-ups for both squads:


During the event, there will be a donation drive that will aim to garner as many resources as possible for those affected by the typhoon. The proceeds from ticket sales and other voluntary contributions will also be given to the Philippine National Red Cross and an NGO.

There will also be a jersey auction, where fans will get the chance to bid (minimum of 1,000 pesos per bid) on the jerseys of the following players:

Saori Kimura (JPN)

Captain of the Japan women’s volleyball team; plays for Turkish club team Galatasaray; London 2012 Olympic bronze medalist.

Wilavan Apinyapong (THA)

Captain of the Thailand women’s volleyball team; plays for Azerbaijan club team Igtisadchi Baku; Most Valuable Player at the Asian Championship 2011 and 2013.

Pleumjit Thinkaow (THA)

Most popular player in Thailand; Best Blocker at the 2013 FIVB World Grand Champions Cup in Japan; has played in club leagues in China, Russia, Vietnam, Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Nootsara Tomkom (THA)

Nootsara is probably the world’s best setter right now; she has won various best setter honors in major FIVB and AVC competitions including the recent 2012 FIVB World Grand Prix, 2012 AVC Cup, and the 2013 Asian Championship; she plays for Azerbaijan club team Rabita Baku.

Onuma Sittirak (THA)

Onuma is a hard-hitting spiker and feisty server from Thailand. In 2012, she dominated the 2012 AVC Cup in Almaty, Kazakhstan, winning the Best Spiker, Best Scorer and Most Valuable Player awards. Last November 2013, Onuma was named as Best Outside Hitter of the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup in Japan.

Sontaya Kaewbundit (THA)

Sontaya is one of the up-and-coming stars of the Thailand women’s national team. She was part of the team that placed fourth at the FIVB World Grand Prix 2012 – Thailand’s highest ranking ever in an FIVB competition. She was also part of the gold medal team at the 2012 AVC Cup and the bronze medal team at the 2013 Summer Universiade.

Those interested in watching the event can purchase tickets at the Ynares Sports Arena on December 7 (Saturday) from 1:00-5:00PM and on December 8 (Sunday) from 1:00-3:30PM.
