The 2016 Olympic Heartbreaks (Women)

Grab some Kleenex…

Take note, the list is based on the players whose team is in Rio. Sadly, without them.

Tandara

Opposite Hitter

Brazil

She became a mother late last year and just didn’t have enough time to get back in great shape for Rio.

Nicole Fawcett

Opposite Hitter

USA

Another Olympics yet another heartbreak for Nicole.

Sanja Malagurski

Outside Hitter

Serbia

She has not fully recovered since that 2011 injury and her game has changed since then.

SAD.

Lioubov Sokolova

Outside Hitter

Russia

Not in the best shape due to a foot injury and she publicly revealed that it’s not fair for her to take someone’s spot on the team just because she is Sokolova.

Loves her!

Valentina Diouf

Opposite Hitter

Italia

She was on THE list and had already started packing for Rio but Coach Bonitta sent her a text saying he has replaced her with another player.

One text message changed her Olympic volleyball fate.

Logan Tom

Outside Hitter

USA

As much as she wanted to play in her 5th consecutive Olympics, the 2 time Olympic silver medalist revealed that Coach Kiraly called to inform her she is no longer needed on the national team.

Ekaterina Gamova

Opposite Hitter

Russia

Due to physical reasons, Gamova announced a couple of months ago that she is not in the best shape to play in her 5th Olympics. Thousands of fans were shocked by the announcement especially when Sokolova made the same announcement a few weeks before.

Just like Logan, Katya has 2 Olympic silver medals.

Francesca Piccinini

Outside Hitter

Italia

The face and queen of Italian volleyball abruptly announced her retirement from the national team right after the 2016 Olympic Qualification Tourney where Italy qualified. Picci said that Coach Bonitta cannot fulfill her demands expectations.

Some fans claim Picci does not want to be a bench player in Rio.

Yukiko Ebata

Opposite/Outside Hitter

Japan

She was one of Japan’s scoring machines 4 years ago in London and led her team to win an Olympic bronze medal. Sadly, we won’t see Ebata because she is not in the best shape and has not fully recovered from an injury.

Camila Brait

Libero

Brazil

She was cut in London and then 4 years later she experienced the same heartbreak.

We can’t imagine how painful it is to have your Olympic dreams crushed 2 in a row despite all the sacrifices you’ve made. Brait, who was the starting libero since 2013s, was outplayed by teammate Leia this year.

Zeng Chunlei

Opposite Hitter

China

She has not fully recovered from her injury and her skill level failed to meet Coach Lang Ping’s expectations so 2 young oppos are going to Rio instead.

Other notable players who are not in Rio are Evgeniya Startseva (Russia), Suzana Cebic (Serbia), Sarina Koga (Japan), Tandara (Brazil) and Lauren Gibbemeyer (USA).
