Turkish Player Gets Punched

VIOLENCE is NEVER THE ANSWER!

Turkish volleyball player, Nurcan İbrahimoğlu, has confessed that she was verbally and physically attacked in Istanbul last July 28th inside a bus because she was wearing basketball shorts.

How short were the shorts? That we don’t know.

Nurcan said that she was sitting with her legs stretched out toward the aisle when a male passenger purposely hit her feet then sat beside her. The 19 year old asked the passenger to apologize for hitting her feet but she got an unwarranted sermon instead.

The male passenger told her that “she could not sit on the bus, stretching her naked legs, corrupting the morals of the people” and called her “insolent (meaning: showing a rude or arrogant lack of respect)”.

Nurcan denied such allegations which provoked the man to punch her in the face – splitting her lip.

Passengers around them attempted to calm the heating situation down but failed and even stopped Nurcan from calling the police to prevent more “trouble”.  The assailant asked them if they saw him hitting her – sadly no one replied.

İbrahimoğlu went to police station the next day to file her complaint but she was ignored. She went to a forensics department to get a battering report but was denied because she doesn’t have “broken bones nor a stab wound.”

If her claims are indeed true, we hope she gets the justice she deserves. We hope this won’t happen again. As a country, we are not familiar with Turkey’s culture and beliefs but all we can say is that punching or physically hurting someone and verbally attacking others is NOT the answer to settle things wherever you are in the world.

This is a very emotional and traumatic experience for her so we hope she can move on in time.
