Volley For Peace in Afghanistan

Great job BBs!

U.S. Army Soldiers of the Fort Knox, Ky.,-based 3rd Platoon, Company B, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Task Force Duke, played volleyball against the locals last Feb. 21st. in the war torn city of Khowst Province, Afghanistan.

The 20 minute match took place after a bombing incident (luckily no one was seriously hurt!). They were on their way to a different city when they spotted young men playing volleyball and asked if they could join and play against them.

Guess who won? The locals!

Our brave BBs are hoping that the tournament would be a way to promote unity and peace among soldiers and civilians – who have been victims of violence and lawlessness for more than 30 years.

The unplanned tourney was/is also a way for soldiers to connect with the Afghans and gave them the opportunity to dissolve the perceptions of the locals on foreign soldiers or coalition forces.

Our favorite part from THIS ARTICLE we’ve found:

The 1st Bn., 26th Inf., Soldiers and the rest of the Soldiers of TF Duke will continue to take every opportunity to show the Afghan people that coalition forces are here to help them build a safer, more prosperous country capable of delivering effective and timely services.

And if volleyball can be part of that equation, so much the better.

“It was an excellent chance for us to build rapport with the Afghans,” says U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Jordan Weiss & the platoon leader for 3rd Platoon.

Amazing!

We wish everyone in the country of Afghanistan peace and security.

It’s a tough fight out there and we’re glad that volleyball gave and gives you the chance to connect with the locals.

Volleyball Unites Indeed.

Until next time…
