Disappointing Moments of Disability By Katie Holloway

I am not the first person to say, “why me?” when it comes to my disability. In fact, I can’t ever remember a time I have ever said that. I actually believe it is a huge blessing. But lately, I’ve had some moments where I’m disappointed in the circumstances I’m put in by it. I want to preface all this by saying I have THE BEST prosthetist and home for prosthetics a girl could ask for– Scott Sabolich Prosthetics in Oklahoma City. My prosthetist, Kyle, teaches me something new every time I go and bends over backwards to make sure I am comfortable with my leg, not to mention the other staff is pretty amazing too. I am very lucky to have such incredible people who care for me and allow me to live the way I want.

With that said, there are things out of Kyle’s control that I just have to live with. Several years ago when I first started going to Sabolich, I began using different liners. Liners are a long sleeve worn directly on the skin to provide a form fit for the stump to fit in the prosthesis. Liners have a gel lining inside to allow the skin to breathe. In January, I realized my foot was broke so I couldn’t adjust the heel height. As a result I began experiencing nagging low back pain. So I sent it in to get fixed. When I went in to pick it up, Kyle had some bad news, the company that makes my liners is no longer going to be in business due to a very shady lawsuit. Completely out of my control. Something I live with everyday that some bad business fiasco just affected myself and thousands of amputees across the country. Myself, as well as all the others who use this product, now have to change liners which is no easy task. Overall, I have no control over what happens but I sure would like to give these shady lawyers a piece of my mind.

The end.
