Per FIVB:

The FIVB Volleyball World League enters its 23rd year in 2012, with the tournament unlike any other global competition in the world. Established in 1990, the FIVB World League is the premier annual men’s international volleyball tournament. Spanning across the globe, it offers considerable prize money, professional organisation and worldwide TV coverage.

This year’s tournament is set to take place from May 18 to July 1 across 16 countries.

A total of 16 teams will again take centre stage across three weeks of top-class volleyball action. With each week featuring four pools in four cities, millions of volleyball fans will be able to watch the world’s best players compete for a place in the Finals, taking place this year in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Russia sealed their second title in 2011, denying world No. 1 Brazil a hat-trick of titles in the process. Vladimir Alekno’s team had been on the podium in the five previous finals but it was only in 2011 that they matched the achievements of the 2002 squad. Poland made sure the home fans had something to cheer about as they edged Argentina to the bronze medal.

With the competition set to take place just a month before the London 2012 Olympic Games, teams will be more eager than ever to prove their form.
