Jake Gibb Fights On

I N S P I R I N G!

Before he went to London to fight for an Olympic Gold, American beach player, Jake Gibb, survived a very tough fight.

Here’s the official press released we’ve received from Hans Stolfus:

Beach volleyball Olympian overcomes cancer, qualifies for second Olympic Games

Diagnosed with testicular cancer in December 2010, beach volleyball Olympian Jake Gibb beat the odds, and the world’s best competition, to qualify for his second Olympic Games in four years. Gibb returns to Olympic action this Saturday night at 10:00 p.m. local time against South Africa in front of Horse Guards Parade.

“The pinnacle of our sport is the Olympic Games, and for me to go and be able to put USA on my chest [after the two-year stretch I’ve had] is … it means the world to me,” Gibb said before departing for London. “It’s something so special.”

With the support of family and friends, Gibb managed to do the unthinkable, overcoming extreme adversity to achieve his ultimate goal and get back to the Olympiad for the second time (Gibb and current teammate Sean Rosenthal also placed fifth at the 2008 Games in Beijing).
“I feel like I’m the luckiest guy in the world,” said Gibb. “To have my family and friends around me, and to be able to play the game I love [means] more than anything.

“And to be able to go back to something as big as the Olympics, after not knowing if I’d even be able to play again, is so … overwhelming,” Gibb continued. “It’s hard for me to articulate other than to say I’m just beyond grateful.”

Currently ranked No. 1 in the 2012 FIVB World Rankings, Gibb and Rosenthal are peaking at the right time and poised to make a run at gold. An accomplishment Gibb fully understands wouldn’t be possible without the perfect alignment of stars, and the right doctors and family members providing the stripes.
